In Australia, a child must be in a car seat or booster seat while travelling in a private vehicle until they are either 7 years old, or their weight exceeds 26kg. It must be fastened to an approved fitted anchor point in the vehicle. It is not suitable to use a standard seatbelt to hold the car seat or booster seat in place. Australian child restraints must be fitted with a top tether which is attached to a suitable mounting point on the vehicle. The use of European child restraints without a top tether is, therefore, illegal.

To break it down in a way that’s simple to understand, child restraints can be categorised in three groups:

● A baby restraint or infant capsule, for use from birth to 9kg or approximately 6 months of age.

● A child restraint, commonly called a carseat, for use from 9kg or approximately 6 months of age to 18kg or approximately 4 years of age.

● A booster seat and/or harness, with properly fitted seat belt, for use from 18kg or approximately 4 years of age to 26kg or approximately 7 years of age.
